When people think about staying fit, they generally think from the neck down. But the health of your brain plays a critical role in almost everything you do: thinking, feeling, remembering, working, and playing – even sleeping. The good news is that we now know there’s a lot you can do to help keep your brain healthier as you age.
—Alzheimer’s Association Brain Health Topic Sheet
Conventional wisdom has long held that aging automatically means a decline in brain function. We now have scientific evidence that decline is not inevitable. The main pillars of brain fitness are balanced diet, physical exercise, cognitive stimulation, stress management, and social engagement. Keeping your brain active and engaged increases its vitality and builds reserves of brain cells and connections. Brain fitness may be as simple as keeping your brain active through reading, conversing with friends, and engaging in interesting hobbies like playing music, painting or you can add to these by engaging in brain fitness programs.
